Following the Council of Australian Governments meeting the Australian Government has announced new funding to expand the capacity of the health workforce in Australia, including an increase in GP registrar positions. The number of GP registrars will increase from the current national quota of 600 to 800 by the 2011 intake.
Tasmania is hoping for an increase in GP registar numbers from 16 to 25 to deal with the twin issues of GP retirements and the ageing of the general population.
